Why this conversion is different
Squarespace's built-in export moves blog posts and pages as a WordPress XML file, but every page arrives unstyled. The design — the part you paid for — stays behind.
Most people leave Squarespace for lower hosting costs, better SEO plugins or more control. The usual blocker is having to rebuild the look from scratch in a page builder.
A rendered capture solves the design half: it stores the page exactly as visitors see it. Combine it with Squarespace's XML export for the content half.
How it works, step by step
1. Open the live Squarespace site
Use the public domain, logged out, so you capture what visitors see — not the editor overlay.
2. Scroll, then capture
Scroll to the bottom so lazy images and section animations load, then click Generate theme.
3. Install and import content
Upload the .zip in WordPress, activate it, then import Squarespace's XML export to bring posts across.
What gets converted — and what doesn't
Converted
- Section layouts, spacing and grid structure
- Site styles: fonts, colors and button styling
- Images and background media used on the page
- Desktop and mobile layouts from the stylesheet
- Header and footer, captured on each page
Not converted
- Squarespace Commerce products and checkout
- Member areas and scheduling blocks
- Forms, which need a WordPress form plugin
- Content as editable data — use the XML export for posts
A real example
Before
A Squarespace portfolio with a full-bleed gallery, a blog and a contact form, on a yearly plan.
After
A WordPress theme with the same look, blog posts imported from XML, and the form rebuilt with a plugin.
Home, gallery, blog and one post page are captured; posts imported via XML; form reconnected.
Benefits
- Keeps the design Squarespace's export throws away
- Ends the recurring Squarespace subscription
- Unlocks WordPress SEO and plugin ecosystem
- Minutes instead of days of rebuilding
Limits to know before you start
- Commerce and member features are out of scope
- Forms and dynamic blocks need WordPress equivalents
- Each page template is captured separately
Frequently asked questions
Can I export a Squarespace template to WordPress?
Not natively — Squarespace exports content only. Themify captures the rendered design and packages it as a WordPress theme.
Will my blog posts come across?
Yes, via Squarespace's built-in WordPress XML export, which you import after activating the theme.
Do I need coding skills?
No. You open the site, click Generate theme and upload the .zip to WordPress.
Will it look the same on mobile?
Yes — the responsive styles are part of the captured stylesheet.
